5 Tips to Set Yourself Up for Success on Halloween

We all know the holidays are challenging, especially when they are focused so much on food. As hard as you may try to avoid being food focused, somehow it always seems to creep in. Therefore making a plan is going to be KEY!

Here are 5 tips for you if you have kids or are passing out candy on Saturday night!

  • Eat Dinner Before Going Out Trick-or-Treating
    • The worst thing you could do is go house to house with your kids or sit on your stoop with a bowl of candy when you have a hungry stomach. When you get extremely hungry, and even turn a little “hangry” you are going to eat what is readily available in that moment, that being candy. Once you have that one piece and realize you are still hungry you are most likely going to go for the next and the next and so on. So what do we do?!

  • Cook a healthy, well-balanced meal before going out. Make sure this is one of your favorite healthy meals that way you feel satisfied. Make it rich in protein and have a lot of flavor.

  • Drink Your Water!
    • Make sure to drink your normal amount of water during the day, this is going to ensure you are hydrated and not mistaking thirst for hunger.
    • Bring water with you while you are out and about, or sitting passing out candy.
    • Feel free to add a crystal light packet in your water, or some zero Gatorade to make things a little more “fun”.

  • Choose your “hell yes” candy
    • Pick your 2 favorite types of candy and allow yourself one piece of each. Enjoy this and do not feel guilty because then you are more likely to binge.
    • Enjoy the evening with your friends and family and allow yourself a small treat.
    • Do not feel the need to workout 10x harder the next day or increase your cardio, simply just get right back on track the next morning; better yet, stay on track the rest of the day except for the 2 small treats.

  • Empty your Candy Bowl
    • If you are passing out candy make sure there is none leftover at the end of the night. If you keep a big bowl of candy in the house for the days to come then your one day of a few small treats, turns into an entire week or even month!
    • Go through the candy with your kids. If they do not like something that is in their bag then simply put it in a donate pile and get rid of it, no need to keep something that only you will then eat.
    • Make sure they do not have an overabundance of candy, it is more tempting to you and honestly, the children do not need that much for the next month either.

  • Move!
    • Make it fun and add some exercise in as you are going from house to house.
    • Add some lunges, or squats, or fast jogs. Challenge your kids to a race to the next house.
    • Staying moving throughout the day
